Strokeworks privacy policy
Effective 26 October 2026
Strokeworks is an app for paddlers (outrigger, dragon boat, canoe and kayak) that measures speed, distance and stroke rate from your phone. This policy explains what the app collects, where it goes, and the choices you have. In short: your sessions stay on your phone unless you choose to share them. There are no accounts, no ads and no tracking.
Who we are
Strokeworks is made in New Zealand by Strokeworks. Contact: hello@strokeworks.app.
What the app collects, and why
- Precise location, only while you are recording a session, including with the screen off. It gives your speed, distance, splits and route. Location is not collected when you are not recording.
- Motion sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope and gravity), only while recording, to detect strokes, stroke rate and the boat's acceleration.
- Heart rate, only if you pair a Bluetooth heart rate strap or watch, only while recording.
- Optional profile: age, weight and gender, if you enter them, used only to estimate calories on your phone.
- Your settings and boats, such as units, theme and boat names.
- A crash report, if the app closes unexpectedly: a technical record of what went wrong, your app version and phone model. It is kept on your phone and only sent if you tap Send.
Where your data is kept
Everything above is stored on your phone. We do not run a server that receives your sessions, and we cannot see them.
Phone backup. If you use Android's backup, your settings and sessions are included in your Google account's backup so they come back on a new phone. Google stores that backup encrypted; we have no access to it. You can turn backup off in your phone's settings.
When data leaves your phone
Only when you choose to send it:
- Sharing or exporting a session (a GPX file, a raw data file, or a picture of the session) through your phone's share menu, or saving a picture to your photos. It goes wherever you send it, under that service's own privacy policy.
- Sending a session to the Strokeworks team or sending feedback or a crash report opens your email app with the file attached, addressed to feedback@strokeworks.app. We use what you send only to fix problems and improve the app, including the stroke detection, and we don't sell it or pass it to anyone else. Ask us at any time and we'll delete it.
Services the app relies on
- Maps. Map images are downloaded from OpenFreeMap (map data © OpenStreetMap contributors). Like any website, the map server sees your phone's internet address and which map area is being shown, which can indicate roughly where you are. Your recorded route is not sent to it.
- Google Play. Google Play may collect crash and performance statistics (Android vitals) if you have allowed that on your phone, under Google's privacy policy.
Your choices
- You can use the app without entering any profile details or pairing a heart rate sensor.
- You can delete any session in the app, and deleting the app removes everything it stored on your phone.
- You can turn off location, notifications or Bluetooth for the app in your phone's settings at any time. Speed and distance need location.
- Under New Zealand's Privacy Act 2020 (and similar laws elsewhere) you can ask us what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, or ask for it to be deleted. As we only hold what you email us, write to hello@strokeworks.app.
Children
Strokeworks is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them.
Changes
If we change this policy, for example when we add accounts or sharing features, we'll update this page and its date, and tell you in the app before anything new is collected.
